Machine translation can be wrong, especially for legal, medical and official documents. Use it to draft and understand; have a qualified translator review anything with real consequences.

What to watch between Chinese and English

Simplified and Traditional

Both scripts are accepted. If the source is Traditional, choosing "Chinese (Traditional)" as the source helps with Taiwan and Hong Kong vocabulary.

Tense and number

Chinese verbs do not change for tense and nouns have no plural. The translator infers them from context; short fragments can come out in the wrong tense.

Names

Chinese names put the family name first (王伟 = Wang Wei). Add official English names of people or companies to the glossary.

Formal or casual?

A polite request written in Chinese, translated into English with each tone setting:

Could you please send me the report by Friday?

Chinese to English: questions

Is this Chinese to English translator free?

Yes. No account, no email and no paywall. Each request holds up to 5,000 characters, with a fair-use limit per visitor.

Does it read Cantonese?

Written standard Chinese works best. Colloquial written Cantonese is often understood but less reliable.

Can I rely on it for official documents?

Use it to understand or draft. Certificates, contracts, immigration and medical papers need a qualified (often certified) human translator.
